HAI PHONG is the most important seaport city in Northern Vietnam and has many industrial parks invested by multinational corporations. It is also the third-largest city in Vietnam, but No. 1 in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
HAI PHONG is most affected (in the Northern provinces of Vietnam) by sea-level rise. Hai Phong is facing three major issues and is trying to find solutions, experts and experience from Germany: Contaminated rivers flow into the sea Untreated sewage water discharges directly into the environment. Flooding in urban areas is quite serious.

The German Industry Cooperation Association (GWP) will speak to the Federal Ministry for Environment, Resource Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety and other ministries to support HAI Phong to become an eco-city, Mr. Peter Stamm, GWP board member told Mr. Nguyen Xuan Binh, Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee at the meeting on December 14. Mr. Binh said the long-term goal of the city leaders. Hai Phong is making Hai Phong a smart, sustainable and environmentally friendly city. He also noted that the Hai Phong respects the German experience in management, training, and technology in order to support the Hai Phong to achieve that goal.
Hai Phong has completed a pre-feasibility study on the project “Improving drainage and sewerage systems in Do Son and Duong Kinh districts” with a total cost of 100 million Euro, divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 needs funding of 30 million euros. Currently, Hai Phong is seeking outside funding, especially from Germany, to implement phase 1 of the project. Mr. Peter Stamm said that GWP will support the Division to access potential German financial institutions to implement this project. Mr. Peter Stamm also proposed to introduce Hai Phong city to the leaders of the city of Berlin – an intelligent eco-city, for long-term cooperation.

And as a leader of Wilo Company, he wishes to donate a pump to Hai Phong City People’s Committee for installation at any site proposed by the Hai Phong side. Mr. Peter Stamm assigned Mr. Nguyen Dac Hoan, representative of GWP in Vietnam, to be the focal point for liaison, coordination, and implementation of the above cooperation activities between Hai Phong City People’s Committee and GWP in next time.
